Potential Benefits From Utilizing A Spectur Hydrovac Slurry Processing System
While Hydrovac Excavation is rapidly becoming an essential service for many construction applications, the transportation, dumping, and processing of the excavated materials is largely inefficient, costly, and unsustainable going forward from economic, regulatory, and environmental perspectives.
The key to improvement starts with properly located Hydrovac Slurry receiving and processing plants that can cost effectively receive and process the slurry in real time, producing cleaned water and solids for re-use with minimal impact on the environment.
Spectur’s Hydrovac Slurry Processing Systems are designed around these parameters and provide the catalyst for reducing many of the direct and indirect costs created from Hydrovac Excavation.
The 5 Key Areas Of Potential Gain
In addition to the standard operational benefits generated by a Spectur Hydrovac Processing System (low cost, real time processing of Hydrovac Slurry that generates cleaned water and dried solids for reuse or disposal), other key areas of potential gain can be summarized into the following 5 categories…
1. Sustainability / Green Gains
- Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
- Reuse of Water and Soil
- Waste Management. Lower cost for managing waste and diverting waste from landfills.
- Water Stewardship. Reducing the process water and waste water footprint through the use of innovate water technology programs.
Proposed Excess Soil Regulations identify the need to reduce hauling distances which in turn reduces traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.
Hauling distances are driven by dump site locations and extra stops for clean out water and refill water. Properly located dump sites that provide water for clean out and refilling will dramatically reduce the amount of time trucks spend on the road. This will directly increase processing time on site and reduce traffic congestion.
The primary focus of the excess soil regulation is to reuse excavated material. Spectur’s processing systems separate water from solids to not only produce excavated material for reuse but water for reuse as well.
Spectur’s processing plants allow processed solids to be re-used in different applications.
Spectur’s highly innovative, small foot print, high capacity, water clarification system safely cleans water for re-use or safe release to storm water systems or the natural environment.
2. Economic
- Reduce the number of trucks required to work on a given project
- Increase daily net operating revenues of Hydro Vac Trucks
Shorter time off an excavation site to dump can be created by some combination of 1) travel distance from excavation site to dump site, 2) need to pick up clean out water on the way to dump, 3) shorter dump lines due to multiple dump lanes, 4) high operating up time afforded by real time processing, 5) water volume and water pressure available at dump site for faster clean out, 6) water refill available at dump site.
Due to the amount of time it takes to dump after a Hydrovac Truck leaves an excavation site, it is typically not practical to have one truck excavate two loads for the same job site in the same day. Through a combination of dump site location, zero wasted time due to water (dump, clean out, refill), reliable and predictable processing plant operation, and proper logistical coordination, 1.5 to 2.0 dumps per truck per day can potentially be achieved. This can result in less trucks being contracted for work which in turn should reduce contracting costs.
Hydrovac Trucks dumping an average of 1.5 to 2.0 times a day should except to increase their excavating revenues in proportion to their variable and fixed costs.
At a minimum, 2 daily dumps per truck per day could produce operational savings of 25% or more.
3. Regulation
- Dumping will be restricted to compliant licensed receiving and processing facilities. Dumping at licensed facilities that are not fully compliant with their license may result in increased liability via the illegal disposal or improper reuse of processed material.
- Hydrovac Truck Loads will need to be documented and tracked by licensed receiving sites.
- Licensed receiving sites will need to properly perform required levels of water and soil testing and comply with the results of the testing.
- Hauling Excavated Material the shortest possible distance to reduce carbon foot print is going to become expected moving forward (Excess Soils).
The best available practices for Hydro Vac Slurry Processing will carry with it the lowest probability of liability that can be associated with dumping Hydro Vac Slurry. Best practices are going to include 1) fast unloading and cleanout; 2) high plant up time, 3) real time processing, 4) water and solids re-use. These are all features available with the Spectur Hydro Vac Slurry Processing System.
Weights and Measures Compliance. When Hydrovac trucks need to pick up water for clean out on their way to a dumping facility, they may become overloaded in the process and subject to fines and penalties. When utilizing a Spectur processing facility, there is no need to pick up water for clean out prior to dumping.
5. Health and Safety
Road Safety. With Hydrovac Trucks spending less time on the road to complete the hauling, dumping, and water refilling process, and fewer trucks potentially required per day, the overall level of road safety will increase from the reduction in total driving hours.
Workplace Health and Safety. Spectur systems have significant amounts of automation, greatly reducing the potential for human error and injury. Minimal manual labor is required to handle large daily volumes of material.
